"Back in July 2021 a summer staycation for Sarah was far from the relaxing break she had been hoping for.
Sarah suffers from chronic venous insufficiency with secondary lymphedema to both her legs, so when her suitcase fell hitting her left leg, not only was Sarah in immense pain, but a large haematoma formed.
At this stage, Sarah was unknown to me and was therefore trying to manage the haematoma herself with elevation and light support of the limb. With no progress seen and with Sarah concerned about the implications how her venous insufficiency and Lymphedema may impact on the ability of the leg to heal she went to A&E. It was confirmed that Sarah would require incision and drainage of the haematoma. In Lymphedema, any break to the skin risks infection and possible ulceration.
Unfortunately, ulceration did occur and for several weeks little improvement was noticed to the healing of the ulcer, despite wound nurse involvement.
It was in September that I first saw Sarah and we spoke about the benefits of deep oscillation, particularly the oedema reducing and anti-inflammatory effect which would also contribute to a reduction of pain. This was the first client I had treated with wounds and I was so excited to watch the developments over the next coming weeks and had utter faith that Deep Oscillation was the right treatment to get results.
A photo taken at home by Sarah. How the ulcer first started out.
Sarah had the luxury of receiving deep oscillation treatment roughly 5 days a week over the next 8 weeks. As not to disturb the wound healing environment and taking on board the advice of the wound nurse, the dressing was left in situ and therapy was delivered around the dressing. A session lasted approximately 30 minutes. Sarah’s pain and level of oedema all reduced, and week on week the ulcer decreased in size. The wound clinic nurses could not believe it and had 'never heard of Deep Oscillation treatment before'.
I have still have a message Sarah sent me, which I feel just sums up her utter relief and elation of finding Deep Oscillation
“I just want to say I feel amazing, a million dollars. I actually feel alive, no pain in either legs, only the ulcer itself, but the difference that machine can do to someones mental wellbeing - I want to shout it from the hills!”
This was a fantastic case study where the results speak for themselves. I am currently working hard to generate awareness of deep oscillation amongst community nurses and this example goes to show the difference Deep Oscillation treatment can have not only on someone’s health, but also their quality of life.
P.S. If any one is wondering, Sarah got rid out the suitcase as she couldn’t bare the sight of it !
ABOUT DEEP OSCILLATION®
In contrast to externally applied, mechanical forms of therapy, (e.g. vibration), the therapy effect of DEEP OSCILLATION® takes place in the tissue itself and works through the entire depth of the tissue layers (skin, connective tissue, subcutaneous fat, muscles, blood and lymph vessels)
DEEP OSCILLATION® helps in speeding up and improving wound healing processes. Through the oedema-reducing and anti inflammatory effect, the local metabolic elimination and alimentation is improved in all tissue layers, whereby tissue regeneration and wound closure are encouraged on many levels. This is documented by the significant improvement in planimetric and biochemical parameters of the wound healing.
Because of the non-invasive, non-traumatic, gentle nature of this therapy, very early possibilities of application are possible following injury and from Day One post operatively. Chronic conditions can also be worked upon with effective results.
