Do you feel Stuck?

Have you ever felt like you’re stuck in a cycle of self-doubt, unable to move forward no matter how much you try? Is there something you’ve really wanted to achieve or change in your life; a career change, starting your own business, moving somewhere new, showcasing your talent or learning a new language, but you just can’t manage to move forward? If you’ve answered yes to either of these questions, then it’s highly likely you’re holding onto limiting beliefs.

Releasing limiting beliefs isn’t about wishful thinking or forcing yourself to be ‘more positive.’ It’s about recognising the subconscious patterns that hold you back, challenging their truth, and consciously rewriting them into beliefs that empower you to achieve the things you desire.

What are Limiting Beliefs

Limiting beliefs are the stories we tell ourselves that hold us back. They often stem from past experiences, societal conditioning, or fears. These beliefs influence how we see ourselves, others, and the world. Limiting beliefs reside in our subconscious mind therefore they can quietly shape our thoughts, decisions, and behaviours, often without us realising it.

Common Limiting Beliefs

  • "I'm not good enough"
  • "I'll never succeed"
  • "I'm not worthy"
  • "I'm too old/young for that"

How to Spot Limiting Beliefs

If you’re not yet sure what your limiting beliefs are, here are some tips to help you identify them:

  1. Listen to Your Inner Dialogue
  2. Notice Patterns
  3. Pay Attention to Emotional Triggers
  4. Observe Limiting Language
  5. Explore Areas of Resistance

By becoming aware of your inner language and thought patterns, you can begin uncovering the limiting beliefs that may be holding you back.

The Root Causes of Limiting Beliefs

Limiting beliefs arise from three primary sources:

  1. Survival Mechanism (Rooted in Fear and Protection)
  2. Conditioning (Rooted in External Influences)
  3. Identity and Self-Concept (Rooted in Self-Perception)

Understanding the root of your limiting beliefs is crucial because it allows you to address them at their core, not just their symptoms. This creates understanding and supports your desired change.

How Developing a Growth Mindset Helps Release Limiting Beliefs

When you embrace a growth mindset, you unlock the ability to question and reframe the stories you've told yourself. A growth mindset empowers you to:

  • View challenges as opportunities to learn, rather than insurmountable obstacles.

  • Believe in your capacity to change, releasing the grip of long-held limiting beliefs.

  • Replace “I can’t” or “I’m not” with “I can learn” and “I’m becoming.”

4 Steps to Releasing your Limiting Beliefs

Step One

Before you can change a limiting belief, you first need to recognise it. Start by noticing when and where this belief shows up in your thoughts, actions, and even physical sensations. Pay attention to recurring phrases like “I can’t” or “I’m not,” and consider how they shape your self-identity. Journal these to start recognising patterns.

step 2

Just because you’ve believed something for a long time doesn’t mean it’s true. Explore where your limiting belief came from and whether it still serves you. Challenge its accuracy by asking: Is this a fact, or just a story I’ve been telling myself? Who would I be without it? Journal your responses to determine the facts.

step 3

Now that you’ve challenged your limiting belief, it’s time to replace it with one that supports your growth. Acknowledge the role your old belief played and consciously choose a new belief that aligns with your goals and potential. Write down your desired new belief.

step 4

Creating lasting change means actively reinforcing your new belief until it becomes second nature. This step focuses on practical ways to integrate your belief into your daily life and mindset. Write a simple, positive statement you can repeat to yourself, like “I am capable of achieving my goals with time and effort.” Repeat your new belief daily, either aloud or in writing.

It’s in your hands

Yes, you can release any limiting beliefs you hold but it will take work and time, however it will be worth it. You just need to start. Follow these steps, reflect and journal your thoughts to each step.
