San Diego, CA July 20, 2018:
Focussing on treating the under diagnosed condition from a holistic perspective - a book written for people with Lipedema
Lipedema is a chronic, progressive and painful adipose tissue disorder that was first described by Doctors Allen and Hines of the Mayo Clinic in the 1940’s.
“People with lipedema are pear shaped and the lower body looks much larger than the upper body, almost like the top half of the person doesn’t belong on the bottom half. They have painful legs that bruise easily. Often, when they visit their doctor, they are dismissed as being ‘obese’ based on their BMI and told to start a weight loss diet. I wrote this book to address the whole person, with treatments for the body, mind and spirit,” said Lisson.
The book focuses on treatment goals for lipedema, tips for reducing pain and inflammation and techniques for boosting the body’s lymphatic system to reduce swelling.
The cover artwork, an image of three people with lipedema, was created by Oakland, CA artist Kathryn Lynn Hack. Hack is a body positive teacher and artist and has lipedema herself. Her website is BelovedBodies.com. “We wanted to proudly show people with different lipedema body shapes and in different stages of the disease. The image of them together shows that community and friendship is an important part of fighting this disease.”
Author Kathleen Lisson is Board Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. She owns Solace Massage and Mindfulness in Pacific Beach and has taught classes at IPSB Massage College in San Diego.
