On London Daily News: Physiopod UK launches national survey to bridge critical evidence gaps in head and neck lymphoedema care

PhysioPod® UK Limited, the exclusive supplier of DEEP OSCILLATION®, has announced the launch of a comprehensive national survey initiative titled “UK Treatments & Experiences of Head & Neck Lymphoedema (HNL)“. This initiative aims to collect robust data from both patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs) to illuminate significant challenges in Head and Neck Lymphoedema (HNL) management and demonstrate the potential of Deep Oscillation Therapy (DOT) as a cost-effective solution for the NHS.

The Evidence Gap and Patient Burden

Head and neck lymphoedema is a highly prevalent and debilitating long-term consequence of cancer treatment, affecting up to 90% of individuals treated for head and neck cancers. This condition profoundly impacts a patient’s quality of life, restricting vital functions such as speech and swallowing.

Despite the high numbers affected, literature focusing on effective HNL intervention strategies and self-management methods remains scarce. Furthermore, Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)—a core therapeutic component—lacks sufficient quality and quantity of evidence to fully support its stand-alone application in the head and neck area.

A Patient Perspective: A ‘Game Changer’ in Recovery

Deep Oscillation is a non-invasive, internationally patented therapy already used successfully in many NHS Lymphoedema clinics and by private practitioners. Patient experiences highlight the profound benefits of effective adjunct treatment.

One patient, Corinne, who experienced severe secondary lymphoedema and fibrosis after extensive head and neck cancer surgery and radiotherapy, noted that while the operation was life-changing, the Deep Oscillation treatment was equally life-changing. Corinne’s experience characterised DOT as a truly transformative treatment. The non-invasive therapy significantly softened fibrotic tissue, reduced pain and swelling, and restored movement to the face and neck, enabling clearer speech and easier swallowing. The severity of the improvements led the patient to invest in a personal DOT unit for self-management.

Demonstrating Clinical and Financial Value

The survey seeks systematic data to quantify the impact of HNL and compare existing resources against the outcomes demonstrated by Deep Oscillation Therapy. Inadequately managed HNL often results in severe and expensive complications, such as recurrent episodes of cellulitis. The data collected is intended to quantify this financial burden, allowing PhysioPod UK Limited to demonstrate that investment in effective adjunctive therapies, such as DOT, can lead to long-term cost savings for the NHS and to significantly improved functional outcomes and quality of life for patients.

Call for Participation

PhysioPod® UK Limited strongly encourages participation from all relevant groups in this evidence-gathering initiative:

  • Individuals Living with HNL: Whether treatment with Deep Oscillation Therapy has been received or not.
  • NHS Lymphoedema Professionals: Including nurses, therapists, and consultants, whether Deep Oscillation Therapy is incorporated in treatment or not.
  • Private MLD/Lymphoedema Practitioners, whether Deep Oscillation Therapy is incorporated in treatment or not.

The Directors of PhysioPod® UK Limited confirm that participation in the survey is entirely voluntary. Responses will be anonymous and treated with the strictest confidence. Data will be analysed in summary form and may be used in reports, presentations, or publications to inform awareness and understanding of HNL treatments, including by sharing insights with NHS stakeholders.
