Justine Asghar: 'Delivering excellence with the DEEP OSCILLATION® Personal Pro' in Cheshire

Justine Asghar took on Deep Oscillation for her practice seven years ago, with the HIVAMAT 200. After reading the first PhysioPod NewsMagazine in August 2020, she wrote to PhysioPod to further enquire about the features and benefits of the Deep Oscillation Personal Pro and the added new features that had just been announced.

Justine sees many post surgical clients in clinic and in their homes and so was looking for something that would meet her specific needs. After perusing the information we sent Justine decided to invest. In the September PhysioPod NewsMagazine Justine provided the following feedback:

"After qualifying in Manual Lymphatic Drainage in 2013, I soon invested in the Hivamat 200 after using it in Cork TLC clinic which is where I did my T2 and T3. I was instantly converted after seeing the results.

As I work both from home and in a clinic, I decided it was time to invest in a second device, to save carting my Hivamat between treatment venues. The first thing that struck me was how lightweight the Deep Oscillation Personal Pro is; it can virtually fit in my pocket.

I decided upon the Pro as I am used to choosing my own frequencies - I treat Lymphoedema, Lipoedema and post surgical cases and I know which frequencies work for me. The Pro has this fantastic preprogrammed menu where I can choose different conditions and the frequencies are already set. It’s a feature I find really helpful despite me knowing what I like to work with for various conditions.

My clients are really excited with my new device, even though I’ve used deep oscillation on them for years. I’ve used the individual programme just as much as the preset menu and I am really impressed with both features."

About Justine Asghar, MLD Qualified Practitioner

"My background is complementary therapies, which I started practicing in 2003. I worked at an NHS breast cancer clinic for 4 years where I became aware of Lymphoedema and the life changing effect it was having on some of the patients. I decided to leave the NHS & study Dr Vodder MLD. In 2013, I qualified and began working in the private sector. Since qualifying I have come across and treated a range of conditions all associated with the lymphatic system. I’ve even had the privilege of treating past patients from the breast cancer clinic.

I still have contact with the BCN’s and consultants at the clinic which gives continuity with the care plan. I take referrals from private clinics both locally and nationally , treating post surgery swelling. I work from a private clinic set in the heart of Cheshire, it’s location is discreet and it has a warm friendly team of therapists working on wellbeing and rejuvenation. The clinic is QCC registered and has an NHS plastic surgeon on site.

Deep oscillation is a unique, internationally patented treatment method. Its special structure allows you to create biologically effective oscillations in the treated tissue using electrostatic attraction and friction.

The gentle, pleasant oscillations have a deep-acting effect on all tissue components (skin, connective tissue, muscles, blood and lymph vessels).

The following physiological effects of deep oscillation are clinically proven:

• Highly effective in reducing pain • Anti-inflammatory • Effective in reabsorbing oedema • Promoting wound healing • Anti-fibrotic

Deep oscillation therapy enables liposuction to be performed more efficiently and with less trauma when applied pre-operatively. As liposuction is less traumatic, patients benefit from less bruising, post- operative pain and faster recovery.

In contrast to externally applied mechanical forms of vibrational massage (which only act on the surface of the skin), deep oscillation works in the entire tissue layers, permeating a depth of 8 cm (Solangel, 2010), with clinically proven effects in the connective tissue structures.

Post plastic surgery and liposuction

Deep oscillation therapy has proven effects in post (plastic) surgery and liposuction interventions. It reduces pain and oedema, improves mobility and promotes wound healing among other effects. It has been used in this field around the globe for many years, e.g. after mastectomy or breast reconstruction.

Application methods of deep oscillation

  • The client holds a titanium bar; the therapist wears thin vinyl gloves and an electrode is attached to their arm. Both the electrode and the bar are connected to the machine. The oscillations act on the tissue segment undergoing treatment and the tissue is attracted and released between 5 and 250 times per second.
  • Alternatively, a special applicator can be used.
  • Techniques are not difficult and can be learnt during a user training by appropriately qualified therapists. Deep oscillation can be applied in any external location: face (including over eyelids), legs, buttocks, abdomen, arms etc.
  • Each body section is treated for 15 minutes. 3 sessions are recommended before and 3 sessions after a liposuction intervention. Minimum 5 sessions after plastic surgery.
  • For reasons of sterility (in open wounds, burns, ulcers etc), treatment is performed through sterile foil.

Post liposuction and post plastic surgery treatment

In post liposuction and post-surgery, it is recommended that patients undergo a 30 minute deep oscillation treatment (15 min per area) starting on the 1st day after the intervention.

Who should look at this?

• Aesthetic Surgery clinics providing liposuction

• Clinics collaborating with Aesthetic Surgery clinics

• Clinics specialised in Lipoedema treatment

Taking it forward..

  • Aesthetic surgery clinics can introduce a new service to their customers: a pre and post-surgery treatment package. Adding Deep oscillation treatment into the package will not only make the intervention less traumatic and more efficient, it also promotes faster recovery for patients and significantly contributes to their quality of life.
  • A pre and post-surgery treatment package should consist of 3 x 30 min treatment sessions during the week before the procedure and 3 x 30 min treatment sessions during the two weeks after the procedure.
  • N.B. PhysioPod UK Limited hold a register of Deep Oscillation therapists on their website offering Deep Oscillation in the UK and Ireland and they recommend that if the patient undergoing liposuction has been diagnosed with Lipoedema AND secondary Lymphoedema, then only a qualified and registeredMLD DLT Therapist carries out treatment.
