Deep Oscillation Therapy for Post-Mastectomy Lymphedema at Manuel Fajardo Hospital during 2022-2024.

Deep Oscillation Therapy has proven effective for post-mastectomy lymphoedema. A study at Manuel Fajardo Hospital (2022-2024) found patients experienced a 2.89 cm reduction in lymphoedema, significant pain reduction (initial 4.9 to final 2.1 mean), and an increase in quality of life. Deep oscillation therapy is highlighted as an effective therapeutic option.

Abstract

Lymphedema secondary to mastectomy is a common and underestimated complication, occurring in up to 75% of cases during the first post-surgical year.

This condition leads to decreased strength and mobility in the affected limb, functional and body image alterations, family and work difficulties, impacting quality of life.

Objective

To assess the effectiveness of deep oscillation therapy in patients with post-mastectomy lymphedema treated at Manuel Fajardo Hospital during 2022-2024.

Methodology

A longitudinal, descriptive, mixed, and prospective study was conducted on 26 patients diagnosed with secondary lymphedema following mastectomy who attended the rehabilitation service at Manuel Fajardo Hospital during the period 2022-2024, where they received deep oscillation therapy using the HIVAMAT 200 device, at a dose of 100Hz for 10 minutes, 5 minutes at 50Hz and 20Hz for 5 minutes, over 20 sessions.

Results

Reduction in lymphedema of 2.89 cm.

Reduction in pain: initial mean of 4.9, final mean of 2.1.

Increase in quality of life: initial mean of 100.15 points and final mean of 118 points.

Conclusions

Deep oscillation therapy is an effective therapeutic option for reducing post-mastectomy lymphedema and secondary pain, positively impacting quality of life.
