DEEP OSCILLATION Combined with Acupuncture in Post-COVID Syndrome Pain Management
Thoughts from Nicky Snazell, Consultant Pain Physiotherapist, Author and International Speaker. "Pain relief using a unique combination of movements and hands on treatment with talking/psychotherapy is perfect for calming the system down. Physiotherapy is the perfect arena to restructure thoughts and establish healthy beliefs and attitudes about health. We know Covid causes an inflammatory storm and we know pain and stress lowers our immune system, so now, more than ever, we understand why Physiotherapists are seen as essential workers during lockdown.
In early October, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) welcomed the NHS’s announcement of investment for people with long-term Covid-19 symptoms, and its recognition that long COVID is a severe and long-term health condition that requires rehabilitation to recover.
Shamans have always known the mind-body connection is key to healing and lo and behold, new research now backs them up. The back story to the patient’s pain, is essential to understanding the suffering. The magical vanishing of pain lies in the combination of body work, whilst truly being understood and listened to by your therapist.
Once we feel listened to, the mind can start the healing process.
On the 18th December, 2020 the NHS confirmed the opening of 69 specialist clinics across England which will offer rehabilitation to people recovering from the disease which is excellent news. There is no single medical definition for long Covid. Two people recovering from an infection can have very different experiences.
'New guidelines written by the National Institute for Care Excellence (NICE), its counterpart the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) and the Royal College of GPs, list more than two dozen common long-term symptoms including breathlessness, a cough that won't go away, joint pain, muscle aches, hearing problems, headaches, loss of smell and dizziness and mental health problems.'
From a purely anecdotal viewpoint, I find, in my clinic, that post COVID patients, in pain, are more sensitive to any stimulus; the nerve receptors more sensitive to touch and temperature and patients can get rashes from anti-inflammatory gels. Deep Oscillation before and after needling appears to make their post treatment reaction much softer and calmer.
