In 2007 PhysioPod UK Limited received an abstract of the study entitled "Effect of Treatment with Low-intensity and Extremely Low-frequency Electrostatic Fields (Deep oscillation®) on Breast Tissue and Pain in Patients with Secondary Breast Lymphedema" which was subsequently published in J Rehabil Med 2008; 40: 645-650. Jahr et al.. The study was completed at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Charité Universitätsmedizin in Berlin. The abstract was forwarded to health care professionals in the Lymphoedema field in the UK and Ireland for review.

Rebecca Elwell (nee Bellingham) ex chair of The British Lymphology Society contacted PhysioPod UK Ltd on receiving the abstract and the study was presented by Dr Kirsten Mathiske-Schmidt at the BLS Conference in Belfast 2008.  Rebecca now successfully uses DEEP OSCILLATION® at the Lymphoedema Clinic at The University Hospital of North Staffordshire.

Background Information MLD:

In France in the 1930's Dr. Emil Vodder had noticed that people who were suffering from chronic catarrh and sinus infections tended to have swollen lymph nodes (glands) and much against the medical practice of the time, started to work upon these lymph nodes.  Working closely with his wife, Estrid Vodder, ND, they developed a specialist, advanced form of massage now known amongst health care professionals worldwide as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). MLD comprises very gentle, subtle, repetitive massage movements that are based on pumping and scooping, encouraging lymph to flow more freely through the tissues; renewing, nourishing, strengthening and regenerating cells, removing waste products and relaxing the nervous system.  Application of MLD should be performed by certified Manual Lymph Drainage therapists who have undergone a specific training programme. Lymph Drainage can be utilized in the treatment of many different conditions including 

  • Primary and Secondary Lymphoedema
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Non-infected inflammatory conditions (e.g. sprains and strains)
  • Ulceration
  • Dermatological conditions
  • Circulatory disturbances
  • Sports injuries
  • Burns
  • Pre and post aesthetic and general surgery

In the last four years, word of mouth recommendation has led many MLD therapists and Lymphoedema Nurse specialists to add the DEEP OSCILLATION® to their skills with positive treatment outcomes.  The gentle, non-invasive and pleasant therapy is happily accepted by patients.  It has proven effective in the reduction of stubborn fibrosis and with cording after breast cancer treatment, achieving high quality patient satisfaction.

Secondary Breast Lymphoedema

In between scheduled visits to their MLD Therapist/Lymphoedema Nurse Specialist, sufferers of Lymphoedema are now able to treat themselves in the comfort of their own home with the DEEP OSCILLATION® Personal unit which helps to alleviate symptons and maintain their condition.  PhysioPod work closely with their therapist to co-ordinate the exact times and treatment parameters for their patient and programme this to a therapy card which can be inserted into the unit.  PhysioPod do not charge for this feature or for subsequent amendments to timings should they be required.  Pauline, the first lady who decided upon this approach has never looked back and her experience of self treatment can be read below

Secondary Arm Lymphoedema

Linda heard about DEEP OSCILLATION® from her MLD therapist who had learned about the therapy on a study day and thought the therapy might be beneficial for her.  After contacting PhysioPod for more information, lengthy discussions took place between Linda's therapist and Julie Soroczyn and a unit was purchased. Secondary Arm Lymphoedema

After considering and then rejecting the idea of Liposuction as a treatment for Lymphoedema, Zieduna contacted PhysioPod who directed her to Lynora Kennedy for treatment. Zieduna stayed in Lynora's village for a week and had a series of intensive treatments of therapy with the HIVAMAT® 200 , Decongestive Therapy being applied twice a day, for 5 days.  Zieduna and her partner were delighted with the results achieved and returned home with their own DEEP OSCILLATION® Personal which had been sent to Lynora in advance.  Lynora demonstrated how to use the device and in the following week, Lynora helpfully provided details for card programming for the unit based on the success she had had which was forward to Zieduna for use.  This feedback was received when PhysioPod UK Ltd enquired as to how she was getting on..
