Although none of us likes to consider ourselves to be disabled, mobility issues can take many different shapes. They all pose difficulties when travelling, from having swollen and uncomfortable lymphoedema in your feet, legs, arms, or other areas that are not visible to having osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis and quite a few of our members have fibromyalgia.

The Effect of Deep Oscillation on the Lymphatic System
Oedema and haematomas result from bleeding and destruction or damage of lymphatic capillaries by mechanical or surgical trauma. In the acute inflammatory phase of wound debridement, there is also increased phagocytosis and a generally higher need for the transport of extracellular protein, blood cells and other particles, this results in an enormous interstitial increase in the lymphatic load.

Head and Neck Lymphoedema - Improving Quality of Life With Deep Oscillation: Sue Hansard, Lymphoedema Specialist Practitioner
PhysioPod Forward: For the first few weeks of treatment, Sue was only able to use gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), which softened and reduced the Lymphoedema. This was due to skin sensitivities and residual side effects of cancer treatment. Supplementary modalities of Kinesio Tape, Deep Oscillation and low level infra red light therapy were not well tolerated. A garment was found that worked well, without causing any skin irritation and the patient performed Simple Lymphatic Drainage (SLD). After eight weeks, low level infra red light, then Kinesio tape and 6D tape, and finally, Deep Oscillation were re-introduced.

Mrs W was enjoying a family holiday in Florida but developed a streaming nasal and sinus congestion with a persistent cough at the beginning of her last week.  All Covid tests were negative and she thought the heavy cold like symptoms had been caused by repeatedly going between efficient cold air conditioning into high outside temperatures.  Having forgotten her Day and Night Nurse remedy from the UK, Mrs W bought the equivalent cold/sinus congestion medication from an Amercian superstore.  She took two capsules of the day medication which dried up the runny nose and reduced her coughing.  Prior to bed Mrs W took one capsule of night decongestant from the blister pack of two.  She awoke three times during the night urgently requiring to pass urine. She felt very drugged and drowsy with a fuzzy head each time she got up.

Following my breast cancer diagnosis in 2007, I developed very mild lymphoedema in my right arm, non-cancerous side. This was due to an incorrectly inserted PICC line for chemo administration. It didn't cause me much distress and I didn't wear a sleeve. However, in the summer of 2013, which was a warm one, my right arm swelled very quickly one day. I went to clinic and started to wear a sleeve. Unfortunately, two months later I was stung by a wasp on my left hand and my arm started to swell. As I had a spare sleeve, I was able to control it very quickly.

The Effect of Deep Oscillation on the Lymphatic System
Oedema and haematomas occur as a result of bleeding as well as destruction or damage of lymphatic capillaries by trauma (mechanical, surgical etc.). In the acute inflammatory phase of wound debridement, there is also increased phagocytosis and a generally higher need for transport of extracellular protein, blood cells and other particles (exudation). This results in an enormous interstitial increase in the lymphatic load. As a result, post-traumatic oedema develops by overloading the lymph transport system (high volume insufficiency) and backing up in the interstitial space, in spite of increase in the lymphatic flow rate.

In the Summer of 2020, a sore patch on my tongue was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma and I had brutal treatment involving surgery followed by chemo and radiotherapy. "At the beginning of 2021, with no return date on the horizon to my job as a Tennis Coach, I decided to start running to keep my fitness levels up. I was running daily for around two months. The length of the runs ranged from 5/10k a day to 20k. Lipoedema Liposuction: Post Operative Recovery With Deep Oscillation
Liposuction for Lipoedema (a chronic adipose tissue disorder) has become an increasingly popular treatment choice for sufferers; where conservative methods have not been effective. DEEP OSCILLATION® also known as HIVAMAT® 200 therapy, arrived in the UK and Ireland back in 2006 via exclusive distributors PhysioPod® UK Limited. This article, explaining the mechanism of Deep Oscillation with scientific references, has been written exclusively for MLDuk by Dr Jens Reinhold of PhysioMed, the German manufacturers. Claire’s Story – A Single Mum, Struggling To Cope With Lipoedema
What is Lipoedema? Lipoedema (NOT Lymphoedema) is a chronic, hereditary and genetic disorder of the adipose tissue (or body fat) which can be both disfiguring and painful. It predominantly affects women (although men can also suffer) from the age of puberty and beyond. Sufferers may have a normal slim (upper) body shape but a much larger disproportionate lower body below the waist without changes made to diet or exercise regime, in some cases, upper arms are effected too. As Lipoedema progresses, additional, expanding fat cells interfere with the pathways of lymphatic vessels and sufferers can develop secondary Lymphoedema and it then becomes known as Lipo-Lymphoedema. The effects of Lipoedema on the patient can also cause great psychological distress for the sufferer.

What is Lipoedema? Lipoedema (NOT Lymphoedema) is a chronic, hereditary and genetic disorder of the adipose tissue (or body fat) which can be both disfiguring and painful. It predominantly affects women (although men can also suffer) from the age of puberty and beyond. Sufferers may have a normal slim (upper) body shape but a much larger disproportionate lower body below the waist without changes made to diet or exercise regime, in some cases, upper arms are effected too. As Lipoedema progresses, additional, expanding fat cells interfere with the pathways of lymphatic vessels and sufferers can develop secondary Lymphoedema and it then becomes known as Lipo-Lymphoedema. The effects of Lipoedema on the patient can also cause great psychological distress for the sufferer. It is very important for people with lipoedema to eat a healthy diet and follow a programme of low impact exercises such as swimming, walking or cycling.

Study Finds Genetic Link to Lymphedema
Breast cancer survivors who develop lymphedema after treatment for their cancer have a genetic predisposition to do so, according to a new study published in PLoS ONE. The study also found that the risks of developing lymphedema increased significantly for women who had more advanced breast cancer at the time of their diagnosis, a high body mass index, or increased number of lymph nodes removed.
