About six weeks ago I found myself in the position of rescuing a little boy who was hurtling downhill towards a fence at our local park and did not show any sign of stopping! His father was shouting but could not get to him in time and so I ran to stop him as I was nearer. I managed to stop him but in the process I went over on my ankle, as the boy and the bike landed on top of me! It was pretty painful but I managed to get home and thought it would be alright and that I had just twisted it.
The next day I was playing a couple of games of tennis at David Lloyd and in reaching a return shot twisted the ankle again but this time it felt very tender and I was unable to put my weight down on it. It started to swell very quickly and in fearing I had compounded the park rescue injury I was taken to hospital by my opponents! I was told at A&E at the Queens Medical Centre that I had ruptured a ligament. Ouch!
I did as I was told at the hospital and tried to rest it as much as I could but being in a very busy job it was hard to sit around! The swelling was huge and it was very painful and my shoe hardly fit, very embarressing. Two colleagues at work who had seen Julie at Therapeople recommended that I go to see her as they had had good results with their sporting injuries.
I went to see her on a Sunday morning which was ideal for me. Her room is lovely and she made me feel at ease quite quickly. We had a chat about my medical history and she took notes accordingly. She then started to use the her therapy on me.
She worked behind my knee first to clear the lymph area in readiness for the removal of the metabolic waste by-products and fluid build up that she said were going to leave my body through the treatment. It sounded good, I let her continue! She then worked on the ankle and lower leg. The treatment feels like nothing I have ever felt before. Like a light quick buzzing and it doesn’t hurt, one thing I was really worried about as it hurt enough! After the treatment, I definitely felt in less pain with it and it was easier to walk on with my weight applied and the ankle was far less swollen than it was. Julie said to see how I went and suggested that if the swelling was still a problem that I hire the Deep Oscillation Personal Unit to work on the area 3 times a day.
A couple of weeks later, I called Julie to hire the unit because I wanted to get back to playing tennis again and there was still a little swelling. Also I was now experiencing pain in the other side of the same foot; obviously I was over compensating in my walking to help the injured side! Julie suggested that I use three of the programmes, There was one called Ligament Rupture (15 minutes), one was called Oedema which was for the swelling (25 minute programme) and the other was called Traumatic Pain (20 minute programme). She explained how it worked and it was very simple, there are instructions on the display unit and it is all controlled via one button which you click and turn and the treatment starts. I just used the applicator and worked in circular movements over the areas whilst watching television and in my lunch breaks.
I had the unit for two days and probably used about 6/8 times. I was so happy with the results and cannot believe that not only is there no swelling now there is no pain. No excuses for any poor tennis performance now though!
